A haunting and beautiful study of the body/mind connection. Inspired by the act of remembering past events, the 3 performers create constantly-evolving maps from traces of the dancing body.

Biography

TANJA RÅMAN originally from Finland, studied dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 1997-2000 and gained her MSc in Dance Science at Laban in 2003. Tanja completed her PgC Teaching in Higher Education at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 2008.

Since 2000, Tanja has worked as a dancer with various companies /choreographers including Monika Koch Ensemble, Marie-Gabrielle Rotie, Sean Tuan John and Harnisch-Lacey Dance Theatre, performing in contemporary dance/dance theatre/contemporary butoh productions in Wales and internationally. Tanja has been living in South Wales since 2004 and currently works as a freelance choreographer/dancer/researcher and lectures on the dance degree course at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff.

As a choreographer, Tanja Råman has developed a distinct movement aesthetic that has lead to her work being shown in established British venues and dance events, including The Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre, The Place Prize 2006 and British Dance Edition 2008. In 2007, Tanja received a Creative Wales award from the Arts Council of Wales to embark on a year-long research project and to develop her choreographic practice.

 

Collaborators

TANJA RÅMAN+DBINI INDUSTRIES was founded in 2005 by Tanja Råman and John Collingswood, to create innovative interdisciplinary work. Their collaborative productions are primarily concerned with exploring the human condition. tanja råman+dbini industries creates work that integrates expressive yet abstract movement with innovative staging, using video, light and sound to develop complex systems of interaction between performers. In the previous productions, tanja råman+dbini industries have collaborated with performer Jem Treays and vocalist Philippa Reeves. In 2009, tanja råman+dbini industries was invited to create and perform a 2-hour durational piece in a disused church in Northern Spain as part of Marc Rees’ site-specific installation/performance project – En Residencia.

 

Sound

Jon Ruddick
Jon Ruddick originally from Bath, England, moved to Cardiff in 2002 to work for a community arts company Valley & Vale facilitating video and sound projects. In 2003, he started recording and performing with South Wales based experimental sound collectives S.A.A.B., and P.A.S.T. producing improvised durational audio/visual projects performed throughout England and Wales.

In 2005, along with Anne Siegel, Jon founded Steepways Productions and their first project A Bucket Rider was performed at Chapter, Cardiff. Since then, they have produced a number of audio/visual projects, culminating with the Sherman Thomas Archive shown as part of Experimentica festival, Cardiff in 2007.

In 2006, Jon began working with Welsh performer Eddie Ladd on her multi-media movement piece Cof y Corff, processing live video through Max/Msp software and touring internationally. Jon has also worked and toured with Earthfall, Sean Tuan John and Diversions, providing technical support for live video and sound.

Jon is currently a member of Fallen Painting, along with Scotland based singer Nickie Charles. Fallen Painting uses electronic rhythms and looping vocals to create a multi-layered sound space.

 

Visuals

John Collingswood
John Collingswood is a multidisciplinary artist who works through sound, video and visual design. In 1992, he graduated from Gwent College (now University of Wales, Newport) with a degree in Fine Art, and began applying his skills in various performance contexts, from nightclub visuals and djing, through children’s theatre to contemporary dance. Since returning to Wales in 2006, he has collaborated with numerous artists and arts organisations including Marc Rees, Sean Tuan John, Cai Tomos, gaijin-san company, Deborah Light, ShermanCymru, 28degreesdance, Earthfall and Welsh Independent Dance.

 

Biography of Piece

One dancer, one musician and one artist join forces in this beautifully crafted and powerful performance. The three performers create constantly evolving maps from traces of the dancing body, exploring the world of memories - the traces of human experience.

Is it possible to choose a moment to preserve forever? When we look back at this moment, has it become something different?

Featuring the distinct movement aesthetics of Tanja Råman, stunning photography by John Collingswood and hypnotic electronic soundscape by Jon Ruddick, (re)traces effortlessly blends the work of these three exceptional artists into a mesmerising and poignant experience.

(re)traces is developed from material created for a full-evening performance: traces that was produced by tanja råman+dbini industries and Taliesin Arts Centre, with support of the Arts Council of Wales, Chapter, Dance House, the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, Welsh Independent Dance and Year of the Bear.
